Alberta Digital Traction Program
The Alberta Digital Traction Program helps businesses grow and succeed in the global market. Who Can Apply?
The Alberta Digital Traction Program is designed for for-profit small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Alberta, aiming to test and grow their innovative digital technologies. For Alberta Digital Traction to qualify as an applicant, businesses must meet the following eligibility criteria:

- You are a registered for-profit business in Alberta.
- You have between 1 and 50 full-time workers.
- Your annual recurring revenue is less than $1,000,000.
- You have a minimum viable product (MVP)
Funding and structure
Alberta Digital SMEs (the “Applicant”) may qualify for up to $50,000 in funding over a maximum one-year term through the Alberta Digital Traction Program. Applicants are required to contribute a minimum of 25% in cash toward the total project costs. For example, for a project with total expenses capped at $67,000, the Applicant would provide $17,000 in matching funds, while Alberta Innovates would contribute $50,000.
What Can the Funding Be Used For?
The Alberta Digital Traction Program funding supports specific project movements that drive business growth and innovation. To prepare for funding, all projects must meet the following criteria:
Project Eligibility Criteria
Funding is paid directly to the Applicant and disbursed upon receipt and approval of three consecutive milestone-based reports. Funding disbursement is as follows:
- Milestone 1: Alberta Innovates contributes up to a maximum of $15,000 (this includes payment upon execution of the agreement, up to $10,000).
- Milestone 2: Alberta Innovates contribution up to $20,000.
- Milestone 3: Alberta Innovates contribution up to $20,000.
Eligible Project Activities:
Project milestones may include the following activities:
(a) Customer and/or client discovery.
(b) Digital market assessment and segmentation analysis.
(c) Data-driven, online market assessment testing.
(d) Product development based on client feedback.
(e) Advanced market assessment or segmentation analysis.
(f) Advanced sales and/or marketing strategies.
Eligible Expenses
- Costs incurred after the effective date of the signed Investment Agreement.
- Salaries for applicant employees (T4 or contract) at a maximum rate of $50/hour.
- Founders (holding more than 15% equity in the company) can claim salary costs directly related to the project, up to 50% of the total Alberta Innovates investment.
- Payments made between arm’s-length entities.
Ineligible Expenses
- Costs incurred before the effective date of the signed Investment Agreement.
- Expenses that exceed market prices.
- Payments made to entities that are not at arm’s length.
Program Objectives and Performance Measurement
The Alberta Digital Traction (Alberta-DT) Program is designed to pilot a new funding mechanism to support digital SMEs in their journey toward customer discovery, product validation, and achieving product/market fit. By focusing on clearly defined milestones, the Program aims to help SMEs make informed decisions—to proceed, pause, pivot, or stop based on the outcomes—allowing them to reallocate resources effectively to solve the Alberta Digital Traction Program’s next best problem: program Objectives and Performance Measurement.
Evaluation Process
Applications are assessed using a rigorous process managed by Alberta Innovates. Internal Alberta Digital Tech Companies staff and external expert reviewers may be engaged in the Evaluation Process to ensure a comprehensive evaluation. External reviewers are subject to strict confidentiality and conflict-of-interest policies. Alberta Innovates solely decides on the assessment criteria and funding decisions. To ensure objectivity, the names of external reviewers are not disclosed.
