IRAP – Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP)
National Research Council – Industrial Research Assistance Program offers monetary sponsorship to small and medium-sized Canadian businesses employed in technology-driven innovation. NRC IRAP funds research and development at various stages of the invention cycle through its technology invention projects and youth employment strategy programs.
Eligibility Criteria for NRC IRAP Federal Grant
To be considered for NRC IRAP funding, businesses must meet this criteria:
The organization must be an incorporated, profit-oriented small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) in Canada.
The company should have a maximum of 500 full-time equivalent employees.
The business should demonstrate a commitment to growth and profitability by developing and commercializing innovative, technology-driven products, services, or new or improved processes within Canada.
Eligible Expenses
Salaries:
Up to 80% of wages for T4 employees and 50% of costs associated with subcontractors engaged in the R&D project and eligible for coverage.
Contractor Costs:
This includes the expenses incurred from hiring subcontractors and Contractor Costs for the project.
Materials and Supplies:
The materials and supplies category covers costs for essential materials and supplies needed to execute the project.
Travel Expenses:
Travel expenses refer to the costs associated with travel for activities related to the project.
Overhead Costs:
This represents a portion of overhead expenses that can be directly attributed to the project. These expenses must be directly related to the R&D project and are classified as reimbursable costs.

Funding Limit & Timelines
Limit: Funding from $50,000 up to 10 million dollars
Expected Timelines:
- Projects with a contribution of $50,000 or less will take 20 business days.
- Projects with a contribution greater than $50,000 and up to $500,000 will take 30 business days.
- Projects with contributions greater than $500,000 and up to $3 million will take 45 business days.
- Projects with contributions over $3 million and up to $10 million will take 65 business days.
